Waterjet technology and an experienced operator are at times the only economical option to realize a customer’s fabrication needs. For a large scale architectural project, handrail support posts required fabrication to the exacting specifications of the architect. These bars are to be used in a handrail assembly for a large steel staircase and guard rails. There are no typical balusters used in the architects’ design, but instead a complicated stainless steel wire mesh. This required slots to be cut through the 0.75” thick main supports to allow the mesh to pass through and be secured for tension. The slots are only 3/16” wide through the ¾” steel. There are only a few options that could complete these cutouts with the crisp inside corners and accuracy required by the architect, and only one option could complete the project quickly and with repeatable results….waterjet.
