A distinguished stone fabricator in our area had a dilemma. The problem was to make a column base from a piece of 2.5″ thick slate, with a 45 degree beveled edge and a 1/2″ square reveal at the bottom. What might have taken a day to fabricate using traditional methods, was completed in just over an hour using Miller Mechanical’s XD water jet. First the inside was cut to the finished size and the exterior was cut with the 45 degree bevel. An additional set-up was required to locate the column base to recut the bottom of the exterior resulting in the 1/2 square reveal at the bottom. The process provided the customer with an accurate piece, with little finishing before installation, in a fraction of the time of traditional methods.
