Occasionally a project comes around that is a challenge even for our talented waterjet crew. These projects can also come around with a very short turn-around period. There are times when limitations appear to hold back engineers and architects from bringing their ideas into the physical world.
Shown in the photos below is what appears to be a simple project, but proved to be quite difficult. It is a 4” schedule 40 #316L pipe, which needed a 1” wide slot machined over 8 foot in length. It was too long to complete on our customers machining center, but also difficult to complete on a waterjet machine because only one wall of the pipe was to be cut.
Material was needed to deflect the jet stream after cutting through the first wall. With no clear exit path, the water instantly turned to steam generating lots of heat and potential for distorting/relieving the tube as it was cut. With the knowledge and experience of Millers Waterjet operators they were able to satisfy our customer’s requirement in record time.
